April 2014 Declutter & Organize!

As you all know from my March 2014 Declutter & Organize post my biggest challenge is to be more organized, and I would like to declutter my house. Being able to find things when I am looking for them makes me happy. I used to think that I need a bigger space, more room, a larger home.  Strike that! You can live comfortably and grandly in any living space as long as you limit your possessions to the ones you actually need and love. 

It’s very easy in a busy life such as ours to let a few things slide here and there, and before you know it, you have a big mess! Let’s face it - “clutter happens” and clutter is one of the biggest time wasters of our house keeping duties. Well no more mess! I am getting back on track! 

So I have created now for April a calendar that I will share with you to help me stay focused. If you feel overwhelmed at your house, please join me in this monthly challenge.  

Here are few tips that I set for myself:
~ Work a calendar day assignment with music or something that will motivate
~ If I don’t finish the assignment, I will start again the next day with this   
~ Declutter with bags: trash bag, donation bag and put away bag
~ Every month create a box called 3 months (you will rotate with 3 boxes), place  
    item not used for 1 year in the box. If I don’t need it in 3 moths put it in     
    donation or trash bag.
~ Clean all areas that you declutter.

Which Paint Color to Pick?

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Which paint color to pick for my bedroom is the hardest question for me. Let’s face it, what ever we pick will result in either a flurry of smiles on our faces or a painful silence each time you enter the room. I have read that a small bedroom will appear smaller if the walls are painted in a dark color, so since my bedroom is medium sized with chocolate color furniture, I decided light and neutral colors would be the ideal selection. Of course if you have a large bedroom, you can definitely experiment with bright or dark color hues. 
So here are my favorite paint picks, now I just have to decide on the final two and than see which one appeals more to my hubby. Of course this is more easy said than done, because I love them all. So I am asking you to help me pick the final 2.

Coconut Oil Pulling

Oil pulling has been around for years, which makes me mad I’ve only just found out about it. It’s an ancient Ayurvedic technique that basically involves you swishing oil in your mouth for 20 minutes (no more no less) & it pulls toxins out of your body through your mouth. The idea behind it is pretty simple - the oil is “sticky” and when you swish it around in your mouth bacteria gets stuck in the oil & dissolves.

It’s easy to do. Pick an oil, you can use ORGANIC coconut oil or sesame oil, put anywhere from a teaspoon to a tablespoon (depending on what you can handle) in your mouth, then you may have to chew on the oil for a few seconds for it to melt, because it is solid at room
temperature. It is best to do this on an empty stomach, before you brush your teeth. I know, you are freaking out about the 15 to 20 minute thing, so that is why I prefer to do it while I take a shower in the morning. Pull the oil through your teeth & make sure not to swallow it. Once you start, that oil fills up with toxins, you don’t want to swallow! When your timer beeps, spit out the toxic waste into a plastic baggy or directly into the trash. Don’t spit it down the drain cause the oil will solidify again & mess up your pipes. Rinse your mouth with
water and brush your teeth well. There is no need to use a lot of force here, if doing this causes pain in your facial muscles then just relax a bit. Try using less oil next time and don't swish it around too forcefully.

  • Prevents cavities & gingivitis. Some people even reported it healed their cavities?! Not sure about that one… but who knows?!
  • Helps get rid of acne, eczema, psoriasis & other skin care issues.

  • Cures a hangover & a migraine.
  • Helps with sleep issues.
  • Clears out your sinuses & helps allergy sufferers.
  • If you have halitosis, oil pulling has been a big savior for many sufferers & your morning breath will get much better.
  • Helps with general pain issues.
  • Manages any weird hormonal imbalances.

People rant & rave about oil pulling, now I can see why!

Roasted Cauliflower White Cheddar Soup

Seems like cauliflower is popping out in lots of dishes. So on this cold winter day I decided to try the roasted cauliflower white cheddar soup. It never ceases to amaze me how simple vegetable soups like this one can be so good with only few ingredients. The main vegetable in this soup is cauliflower and it is roasted before being added to the soup to concentrate its flavor and to get a bit of caramelization going. Next is the basics with the onions and garlic followed by the herb, thyme and finally the cheese. For the cheese I picked aged sharp white cheddar. One trick to keep in mind when adding cheese to soup is that if you use a stronger flavored cheese like an aged cheddar then you will not need to use as much of it to get the same flavor. This soup can be amazingly creamy if you use heavy cream for some of the liquid but you can keep it on the lighter side by using 2% milk.

Spring Cucumber Salad

Marinated Cucumbers, Onions, and Tomatoes, yummy and healthy!!

3 medium cucumbers, peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick
1 medium onion, sliced and separated into rings
3 medium tomatoes, cut into wedges
1/2 cup vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup water
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon fresh coarse ground black pepper
1/4 cup oil

Combine ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving
